Known as one of the greatest mountain treks in the world, Mt. Everest and the Khumbu has captured the imagination of adventurers and explorers across the planet. Our adventure to this magical region will take us on a journey into to the rich history and culture of the Sherpa people, their stories of of myth and legend. While the region is steeped in Buddhist and Tibetan traditions, it is also known for its mythical stories of the legendary Yeti. These stories and traditions will serve as a the backdrop as we ascend into this region, and connect with the local people and get a unique view of the world through their eyes..
Our journey begins in Kathmandu, where we will visit many of the sacred sites shared by the Buddhist and Hindu traditions, including the Boudhanath Temple, Pashupatinath Temple and Swayambhunath (known as the Monkey Temple). Today we will participate in an opening ceremony with Buddhist Lamas blessing our safe journey to Mt. Everest and the Khumbu region.
The next day we board our plane for a breathtaking flight (25-min) into the mountains to Lukla airport. Here we will meet our local guides and porters, and have our yaks prepared to carry our gear for our trek. Our goal the first few days will be to ascend slowly and acclimatize to the higher elevations visiting the village of Monzo and Namche Bazaar. We will have a full rest day in Namche and be able to explore this famed village known as the Sherpa capital, and have time to visit its famed bakeries and hike to the Sherpa Museum and Everest View Hotel for our first glimpse of Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam.
On Day 6 we ascend higher we will visit Tengboche Monastery and the village of Dingboche, taking time to further acclimatize. Along the way we’ll view many sacred sites such as chortens and mani stones, where we can make offerings to the mountains. In Tengboche we will have the chance to observe monks in practice and receive blessings from the high Lama’s here to further support our journey. We will take another rest day in Dingboche to acclimatize at roughly 14,000 feet, and have opportunity for a gorgeous day hike up the ridge, or to just rest a breathe in the pure air.
Over the next 3-days we will make our final push up to Mt. Everest, visiting the villages of Loboche and Gorek Shep, and finally Basecamp. On our way to Lobuche we’ll visit the memorial dedicated to the many climbers and sherpas that have been lost on Everest, honoring the memory of those that answered the call to something greater in their lives. Though we are not climbing to the summit, we all take the same journey through life and each have our own summits and challenges to face along the way.
After an overnight in Lobuche, we set out to reach our highest point on the trek hiking to Gorak Shep, and then up to Kala Patar at 18,190 feet where we’ll get the best views of Mt. Everest and the the surrounding peaks of Nupste, Lhotse and Pumori. Here we’ll celebrate our journey and spend time taking in the incredible scenery before descending back down to 16,ooo feet for the night.
The next day we’ll make our ascent to Basecamp at 17,300 feet, where we’ll have a chance to observe climbers preparing for their ascent of the highest mountain. Depending on time this day we may be able to hike up to the icefall and peer into the maze of giant seracs (ice towers) and crevasses, which is the first test all climbers must face before gaining access to Everest’s higher slopes. We return in the afternoon back to Gorek for a well deserved rest, and toast to our safe return.
On Day 12 we begin our return journey back down the mountain visiting the villages of Pangbouche and Kumjung. We descend quickly the lower elevation, reclaiming our breathe and taking in the scenery from another perspective. Here we’ll be able to reflect on our journey and be able to give back to our Sherpa friends. We’ll visit Kumjung the home of our Sirdar Kami, who is one of the village Lama’s, and take the day in helping the community with a local service project. This is a time where we can really show our appreciation to these amazing mountain people and honor the service they give to all who visit their homeland.
We finally descend all the way back to our start through Namche Bazaar, Monzo and Lukla. Here we say goodbye to our friends as we board our plane for the flight back to Kathmadu. Upon return we’ll have a chance to get cleaned up back at our host hotel and then celebrate with a group dinner and a closing ceremony completely our epic journey in the shadows of Everest. The next day you’ll have time for last minute shopping before being transferred for your departing flights.
Kathmandu is the gateway to the Himalaya. Our trip begins and ends in Kathmandu where our local guide will meet you and transfer to your hotel. We will have 2-nights accommodation in a 5 star hotel and have opportunity to explore this culturally rich city. We will visit many of the most important sites, and take part in a ceremony at a local monastery where we will receive blessing for our safe trip into the Khumbu region.
The next day we will board our plane for the 25-min flight from Kathmandu to Lukla airport where we will begin our trek. This is an unforgettable flight into the historic region made famous by New Zealand explorer Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay.
From Lukla we will be accompanied by our sherpa team of guides and porters. They will provide support and look after our needs throughout our 15-day trek. We will be staying at local lodges, or teahouses as they are referred to throughout the trek and have the comfort and hospitality of these quaint locally run inns.
Upon completion of our journey, we will once again fly from Lukla to Kathmandu, where we’ll stay at our base hotel again and be able to collect any baggage left there. We will have a closing dinner and celebration in the evening and be able to visit the local markets for shopping before our departure from Nepal the next day.
